Chennai : The Perambur flyover's new design, tenders for the proposed flyovers and privatisation of solid waste management are some of the issues, which will feature at the Chennai Corporation Council meeting to be held on Wednesday. Mayor M. Subramanian announced at the council meeting last month that the Perambur flyover's blueprint needed to be altered, as the rock base was too soft to support the pillars. The Corporation had consulted Anna University's technical experts to redesign the flyover. The new cost estimate for the redesigned flyover is expected to be presented to the council for its approval. With regard to privatised solid waste management in the Ice House, Kodambakkam and Adyar zones, the council will pass a resolution to ratify the six-month extension of contract with the private conservancy firm Onyx. The extension will come to an end in August, by which time a fresh contract would be awarded to those bagging the contract. Tenders have already been floated and May 2 is the deadline for the firms to submit their bids. The Highways Department has taken over some roads in the city, which were earlier maintained by the Corporation. This issue will also be discussed at the meeting. The Corporation had made a budget announcement of a heart surgery assistance scheme for Corporation school students. The scheme offers free heart surgery in government hospitals or Rs. 50,000 assistance for surgery in government-recognised private hospitals.
A gym for every ward
The Mayor had also promised a gym for every ward in the Corporation. Resolutions sanctioning funds for these funds will be brought up. Decisions are also expected on the filling up of vacancies in the Health Department and promotion of assistant executive engineers.
