Power shutdown on Thursday

CHENNAI: Power supply will be suspended between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Thursday at A-Block in the Anna Nagar area and VOC Nagar, Solaimman Koil Street, Chetty Street, Kumaran Nagar, Kujji Street, Boopathy Nagar and Pachaikal Veerasamy Street in the Kilpauk area owing to maintenance work.

Annual Day

The Annual Day and Sports Day of Vel's Srinivasa College of Engineering and Technology were held recently. State Election Commissioner D. Chandrasekaran addressed the students and distributed prizes to the meritorious candidates. Actor Srikanth participated in the cultural event.

Founder's Day held

Lake View Matriculation School in Ambattur recently celebrated its `Founder's Day'. Director of Matriculation Schools D. Jagannathan was the chief guest. Contests for parents were held as part of the celebration, and Mr. Jagannathan gave away prizes to winners. Student achievers were also honoured in the function.

Senior citizens meet

Tamil Nadu Senior Citizens and Pensioners Welfare Association adopted several resolutions at its meeting in the city recently. It expressed gratitude to the Union Finance Minister for the reverse mortgage scheme that enabled senior citizens to obtain loans against immovable assets, and for ordering the issue of pension to all those eligible. Some of the demands made by the association include an additional two per cent interest on senior citizens' deposits, a reduction in the age for seeking exemption from income tax, exemption from the levy of service tax and issue of railway passes for the elderly.

Nurse commits suicide

A nurse at a private clinic allegedly committed suicide by injecting herself with a lethal medicine at the clinic in Chitlapakkam near Tambaram on Tuesday.

Police said Sindhu (26), after her duty hours, went inside the bathroom of the quarters on the clinic's premises in which she was staying with her husband Gopan. As she did not come out, Gopan and other nurses tried to force open the door. They removed the latch through a window and noticed her lying unconscious. She was taken to a private hospital in Tambaram, where she was pronounced dead on arrival. Police said the couple belonged to Alapuzha, Kerala, and were married in 2004.

IRCTC tours

Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is offering special weekend package tours to Udhagamandalam and Kodaikanal from Chennai.

The tour starts on Friday by Nilgiri Express to Udhagamandalam and by Pandian Express to Kodaikanal. The fare for the three nights, four days package tour of is Rs.6,235. The departure dates are April 27, May 4, 11, and 18 for Udhagamandalam, and April 27, May 4,11, 18 and 25 for Kodaikanal.
