World Book Day event lays stress on reading

State Resource Centre for Non-formal Education releases booklets

CHENNAI : World Book and Copyright Day, which falls on April 23, was observed in the city by the State Resource Centre for Non-formal Education with book releases on Monday.

Speakers at the function, including the centre's chairman B. A. Krishnakumar, its director R. Rajan, and Tata Consultancy Services principal consultant M. Somasundaram, underscored the significance of reading.

The centre aims to help adults through continuing education with a focus on technical training and awareness campaigns. It has produced manuals and booklets on these subjects. Tata Consultancy Services is assisting the centre in facilitating computer literacy.

Directorate of Non-Formal/Adult Education director S. Lakshmi said the day marked the anniversary of William Shakespeare, noted English playwright. All centres of the directorate in various districts of the State had libraries to benefit adult learners, she added.

Editor of Tamil weekly `Kalki' Seetha Ravi narrated anecdotes from the life of her grandfather `Kalki' Krishnamoorthy. S. Kandasamy, writer and Sahitya Akademi awardee, traced the history of the printed word.

The books included primary education manuals, booklet giving an overview of the mid-day meal scheme, manuals on mobile phone and two-wheeler servicing and booklets to provide awareness of the Right to Information Act, blood donation and AIDS.
