NEW DELHI: The uncertainty over admissions to the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) will be cleared by Wednesday. This was indicated by the Union Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry late on Tuesday evening after a series of meetings on the nature of a fresh directive that will have to be issued to the IIMs in the wake of the Supreme Court's refusal to vacate the stay on reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in central higher educational institutions. Earlier in the evening, HRD Minister Arjun Singh had told reporters that the issue would be resolved before the day was through. Soon after, senior officials of his Ministry went into a huddle in the Secretary's office after which their decision was conveyed to the Minister. As Mr. Singh's promise of a decision had raised hopes of an announcement, the media was on vigil at the two meetings first at the HRD Ministry and then at the Minister's residence. However, the only word that was forthcoming was that the facts had been presented to the Minister, and a decision would be taken and announced on Wednesday. While all central educational institutions where OBC reservation was to roll out from the coming academic session were asked to keep their admission lists on hold till further instructions by the Ministry on April 5, a fresh directive had been issued to the IIMs after they said that they could not defer the announcement beyond April 21. The IIMs had said that they would admit students as per last year's intake without implementing OBC reservation and increasing their intake. On April 19, the Ministry issued a fresh directive this time only to the IIMs asking them to abide by the April 5 direction. In the wake of the Supreme Court order of Monday (April 23) refusing to vacate the stay on OBC reservation in higher education, the Ministry is faced with the prospect of having not just the IIMs but also other central educational institutions clamouring about the problems they are likely to face because of this uncertainty since the earliest date for final hearing of the petitions against the OBC reservation policy is May 8 by when admissions in many an institution gain momentum.
