Government colleges' performance improves; girls fare better

HYDERABAD: Significant increase in the overall pass percentage and improved performance of Government colleges are the two notable features of the second year Intermediate examination results which were declared on Tuesday by Higher Education Minister Pinnamaneni Venkateswara Rao.

The pass percentage this year stood at 62.63 compared to 57.33 last year. In 2005, the figure stood at 53.14.

Out of 5,47,747 regular candidates who took the examination 3,43,071 cleared the test. The Minister said 1,45,991 candidates got "A" grade while 1,20,464 secured "B" grade. In "C" grade 58,557 candidates figured while 18,059 passed in the "D" grade. Girls' pass percentage at 65 was better than 61 of boys. Results of 88 candidates is kept pending for want of information from colleges.

Chittoor district topped the list with 77 per cent candidates clearing the examination while Adilabad district figured at the bottom with 46 per cent passed candidates.

The Minister said there was a noticeable improvement in the performance of students in Government junior colleges that recorded 52.15 pass percentage compared to 43.62 last year. The pass percentage in private colleges stood at 72.36. Marks registers of all colleges will be despatched on Wednesday itself and Principals can collect the memorandum of marks from the RIOs concerned from April 27.

Commissioner for Intermediate Education Chakrapani attributed the good performance to removal of shift system, increased teaching hours and orientation of lecturers.

He said the improvement reflected in Chittoor mostly because the changes were vigorously followed in all the colleges in the district.

The Minister said the decision on introducing Intermediate weightage for EAMCET would be taken before the commencement of classes in June.

Intermediate syllabus is also being changed and the CBSE pattern is being studied for this. Asutosh Mishra, Principal Secretary, Higher Education was also present.
