In response to the Public Eye feature on heritage buildings (April 18, 2007), D.N. Raghavendra Rao of Banashankari 1st Stage, writes: One felt sad to read about what Bangalore's heritage buildings are in for. It was sadder to see that the city's planners do not seem too perturbed. No one can justify the city's growth at the cost of history, heritage and aesthetics. One hopes the World Heritage Day would inspire the Department of Heritage, INTACH, AARAMBH and all the agencies concerned to act in unison to preserve precious pieces of history and heritage for posterity. The past is as important as the future. Bangalore's old-timers with a passion and pride for history and aesthetics would be happy to see quick action on the restoration and conservation front. Heritage regulations similar to those said to be in place in Hyderabad and Mumbai ought to be put in place in Bangalore too. The Government could consider giving financial assistance to the owners of private heritage buildings for restoration and their upkeep, he says.
Correction
Mr. Rao says the names of the Dewans in the feature "Where the axe was spared" should have been Purnaiya and P.N. Krishna Murthi.
