BANGALORE: Water contamination is one of the major reasons for the spread and outbreak of diseases during the summer and rainy seasons. So what does the city's prime provider, Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB), do to prevent contamination? Well, for a start, every month it tests nearly 4,000 samples from all its service stations, R. Vasudevan, Chief Engineer (Quality Control), told The Hindu . "We take up regular chlorination of Cauvery water at the source and at the city centres." If any complaints about contaminated water emerge, then supply is stopped immediately at that particular centre till the problem is rectified. The water supply distribution system was designed in 1896 and is remodelled occasionally depending on the development of the areas. The distribution network in the central parts of the city is very old and therefore the supply to these areas is not satisfactory. Pipelines in the old inner city areas of Bangalore, about 250 sq km, are mostly corroded. Stating that a project report is being prepared to replace these pipes, Mr. Vasudevan said that the report has been placed before the Centre to get financial assistance under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.
