Cape buffalo gives birth

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A calf was born to a seven-year-old Cape buffalo at the city zoo at 5 a.m. on Tuesday. According to zoo officials, the calf was doing fine and was seen suckling repeatedly.

The first of the cape buffalos came to the city zoo in 1995; a male and female were brought over from New Delhi. Three calves were born to this pair. Only two out of this survived. In 2002, the male died and the zoo was left with only female buffaloes.

In 2004, another male cape buffalo was brought over from Delhi. According to Zoo Superintendent S. Abu, now the `exchange value' of the animal has gone up considerably.

The newborn and its mother were not isolated from the other animals — as is done with many animal species — as the cape buffalo is a `herd animal' and because the male is as much devoted to raising the calf as the female, Mr. Abu added.
