This Day That Age
The appointment of a joint select committee of the two Houses of the Ceylon Parliament will be sought at the current session to study the constitutional amendments, among other things, to facilitate Ceylon's assumption of the status of a "Republic." A motion for the appointment of a committee, given notice of by the Prime Minister, Mr. Solomon Bandaranaike, was distributed on April 25 to the MPs. Other constitutional amendments indicated in the motion include one for guaranteeing fundamental rights. This is to satisfy the demands of the Tamil-speaking people of Ceylon, following the adoption of Sinhalese as the sole State language of Ceylon.
