Puducherry: Education Minister M.O.H.F. Shahjahan announced in the Assembly on Wednesday that three children of Puducherry, P. Velmurugan, D. Padmanabhan and Sharmila Yadav, have been selected for "Bal Shree" Awards for this year under a Central scheme. Replying to Members' views on education, transport and fisheries, Mr. Shahjaha said that while Velumurugan had been selected for the award under "Creative Art" category, the other two were selected under the "Innovative Science" category. President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam would present the awards at a function in Delhi in June. The Members welcomed the announcement. With a view to ensuring quality in education, the administration had initiated several steps to develop skills of children. To start with, 70 schools had been selected under a pilot scheme to undergo education in "Smart System". This system would enable the children to learn according to the syllabus framed by the National Council of Education Research and Training, with the aid of computes. Personality development courses would be be started in select schools. Education Minister said that, with a view to encouraging education of girls and to ensure that they did not drop out of schools at any stage, a special allowance of Rs.200 would be paid to them. Deputy Inspectors of Schools would be paid a fixed travelling allowance of Rs.1,000 a month. Posting of teachers for pre-primary classes and drawing, music and physical education would be appointed soon. Candidates intending to write Civil Services exams would be sponsored to join coaching in leading institutions in Delhi.
Vehicle registration
Referring to steps taken to tone up Transport Department, Mr. Shahjahan said that registration of vehicles could be done hereafter on the premises of dealers. Centre of Performing Arts and Fine Arts would be started by the Department of Art and Culture soon. He ruled out the possibility of making helmets mandatory in Puducherry. High Security number plate system would be introduced in keeping with the directive of the Supreme Court. After the Minister's replies, the demands relating to the three departments were sanctioned.
