KANNUR: A regional painters' camp, being organised by the Kerala Lalithakala Akademi, began at the Government Guest House at Payyambalam here on Wednesday. Twelve artists, including four women, were participating in the painting camp that was christened `Payyambalam.' The five-day camp would conclude on April 29. This is the third regional painters' camp being organised by the Akademi after its reconstitution. Akademi chairman C.N. Karunakaran said at a press conference here on Wednesday that regional camps were being organised to promote local artists. Painting exhibitions, film screenings and slide shows would be organised at the venue. The akademi was also planning various programmes including seminars and debates on issues relating to painting, he added. Akademi secretary T.A. Sathyapalan said local artists were not getting the support they deserved. The camp was titled `Payyambalam' to highlight the importance of values in painting, he said. Mr. Sathyapalan said that the Akademi's efforts to set up a national reference library in Thiruvananthapuram were underway. Lectures on paintings would be held in Kochi on May 11 and 12, he said. The participating artists in the camp here are Gireesh Makreri, Govindan Kannapuram, K.P. Jyothi Chandran, M.V. Jyothi, C.K. Kunhambu Nair, Rajeevan Parayil, K.C. Sajeesh Babu, P.K. Sheena, Vasavan Payyattam, Vidya Ranjith, N.C. Vipin and P.M. Yamini Mohan.
