CHENNAI:
No adverse impact on the Gulf of Mannar's marine ecosystem has been noticed so far, owing to the dredging being done part of the Sethusamudhram Ship Canal Project, according to S. Kannaiyan, Chairman, Sethusamudhram Ship Canal Project Environmental Monitoring Committee.
The monitoring committee, which met on Wednesday, reviewed consolidated data on the dredging activity undertaken in Adam's Bridge and the Palk Straits and found "no perceptible change in relevant indicators, either in the water or the sediments," he told reporters. The indicators included turbidity, the presence of nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and heavy metals and the effects of oil spills.
In biological systems such as fish, microbes and phytoplankton and zooplankton too, "only seasonal variations were seen, but not due to dredging," Mr. Kannaiyan claimed.
