Things to learn from organic farming

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: A 1.2-kg mango and a 400-gm guava, both organically grown, were two of the `biggest' hits at the Organic Kerala Commodity Fair 2007 at the Ernakulam Town Hall.

The show ends on Thursday. Jose Arancherri from Thirumarady, near Koothattukulam, is a celebrity in his own right as far as organic farming is concerned. He proudly displayed mangoes and guavas from his organically maintained orchards to illustrate the fact that the use of organic methods can yield great results.

Besides organically produced vegetables and fruits, there is also on display organically certified pokkali rice. Organic produces from areas like Coimbatore, Salem, Satyamangalam and Dharmapuri too are on display and sale. A variety of local specialities like a `spiced sweet and sour mango juice' and food items from jackfruit are available at the exhibition.
