Towards a new visual experience

Three-dimensional frames provide an experience beyond the ordinary

Computer-aided designs are capable of presenting life-like images.

The three-dimensional frames provide an experience beyond the ordinary. Technology has gone one step ahead to give a newer experience with the introduction of the `virtual reality' (VR) technology.

This technology can project objects in a new format having a wider impact than the 3D images, according to M.M. Prasad, head of Product Design Services at Tata Elxsi Limited, a company that has pioneered `virtual reality' technology in India.

The company is setting up the first of its visual computing laboratories in the State at an engineering college in Thiruvananthapuram. Such laboratories will be set up in other places later.

The technology facilitates design of infrastructure in a number of scientific applications.

For example, virtual reality pictures can provide a wholesome experience for trainee doctors while operating on a `virtual patient.' While designing automobile parts, the VR technique can provide a more detailed visual account so as to help the designers chart a more appropriate course.

With the portals of information technology opening up in a big way in the State, VR will emerge as a useful model in a variety of applications. "There is a gap between the curriculum and the industry expectations," he says.

The possibilities are immense, says Venu Gopal, an expert in computer-aided design. Biotechnology, tourism and medicine are among the fields where the new technique comes into play, according to him.

Digital product design techniques have already been applied in various fields such as broadcasting, shipbuilding and defence systems. These areas are bound to multiply in the days to come, he says.
