Chinese women dominate

NEW DELHI: Chinese women put themselves in line for a clean sweep by clinching fifth title in as many weight categories at the Asian weightlifting championship at Taian City, China, on Wednesday.

Liu Haixia hoisted a total of 262kg to clinch the gold medal in 69kg weight class on a day there was no Indian in the fray. India has sent only a five-member team, including four women, in its first international event after the federation served one-year ban following three positive dope tests in a calendar year.

Two Indian lifters, Renu Bala (58kg) and Soma Rani (63kg) have so far won two bronze medals apiece. Geeta Rani (plus 75kg) and Sarvajeet Singh (plus 105kg) in the men's section will have their lifts on Thursday and Friday respectively.

The 27-year-old Asian Games champion Liu raised 112kg in snatch and 150kg in clean and jerk to win the gold medal by a distance. Minh Hai Khuat of Vietnam took silver with an effort of 205kg and Chinese Taipei's Kao Ya-chun settled for the bronze medal with 203kg.

In the men's championship, China recovered after losing the gold to Vietnam in 56kg. Qiu Le (62kg), Shi Zhiyong (69kg) andLi Hongli (77kg) won the gold medals with thumping performances.

62kg: 1. Qiu Le (Chn) (138, 177) 315, 2. Yang Fan (Chn) (138, 177) 315, 3. Abdullatif Alaboullatif (Ksa) (121, 162) 283.

69kg: 1. Shi Zhiyong ((Chn) (152, 175) 327, 2. Suphalak Sitthisak (Tha) (135, 165) 300, 3. Setiawan Budi (Ina) (133, 161) 294.

77kg: 1. Li Hongli (Chn) (168, 201) 369, 2. Sandow Weldemar N. (Ina) (140, 188) 328, 3. Kuznetsov Vladimir (Kaz) (142, 180) 322.
