Surprise checks at 57 bar hotels

Special Correspondent

Thiruvananthapuram: Snap checks were held in 57 bar hotels across the State under the leadership of Additional Labour Commissioner (ALC) Prakash S. Oliver on Tuesday.

The officers found that the workers were not getting PF, ESI, welfare fund benefits and even minimum wages. They were also being made to work from 8 a.m. till midnight.

Many eked out a living only on the basis of the tips given by the customers.

The Commissioner ordered the bar owners to pay all eligible benefits to them in 15 days.

He warned that the Department would prosecute those who failed to do so and would try to get maximum punishment for them.

The snap checks, which were conducted on the directions of Labour Minister P.K. Gurudasan, would continue. The Commissioner was assisted by Joint Labour Commissioners of the south, central and northern regions, the Chief Executive of the Welfare Fund Board and other officers.
