Letters to the Editor
The media coverage of Abhishek Bachchan-Aishwarya Rai wedding by television news channels for three days was disgraceful. It is true that the Bachchan family is among the most popular in Bollywood but of what benefit was the marriage to the common man?
Sandeep Ghiya,
It is distressing that in recent years, the electronic media have been devoting more time to irrelevant news that has nothing to do with the common man. By forcing the viewers to see the programmes of their choice, these channels will lose valuable viewership in the years to come.
J.P. Reddy,
Actor Janhvi Kapoor's attempted suicide in front of the Bachchan house was a publicity stunt. But I wonder why the media, leaving aside all major issues, obliged her and went to town with the episode. Had they ignored her, it would have been a lesson for all those who exploit the media for their 15 minutes of fame.
Sadiya Naseem,
The Bachchans first give the media a royal snub. Mediapersons are then beaten up. Finally, the Big B apologises with folded hands. Why? Because he still needs the media to promote his son's career. The lesson for the media? They can be wooed and ignored at will. Thank god for Janhvi! At least her episode was more entertaining than the two huge wooden gates at Prateeksha and Jalsa!
Sandhya Ganpathy,
No doubt, a considerable section is interested in the movie industry. But the media should understand that marriage is a social and sensitive subject. Many of us spend a lifetime earning to spend on our children's wedding. The media should focus on news that can enhance the value of the institution of marriage. They should give wide coverage to those weddings that bring about a social change, like widow marriage.
Ved Sarvotham,
