Akshaya Tritiya

Apart from the folklores that surround Akshaya Tritiya, it is believed that the world was created that day. Akshaya means that which does not diminish. Taking advantage of this, jewellers started luring people to buy at least one gram of gold on the occasion, saying their wealth would multiply. Gradually traders in all products and even banks have created a hype among the people and succeeded in pushing up the sales of everything from a pin to a plane.

N. Radha Krishnan,
Chennai

Akshaya Tritiya is a typical example of how market forces exploit religious sentiments. We allow ourselves to be hijacked by false campaigns that are diametrically opposed to the real significance of the day. Akshaya Tritiya is a day of `giving', for starting new ventures. Let us promote the never diminishing values of love, charity and compassion on the occasion.

M.J. Ruben,
Chennai
