Kerala posts crucial win

Tirunelveli: Kerala scored a creditable 5-3 victory over Karnataka in a crucial match in the four-team league of the 16th South Zone Youth National football championship at Anna stadium, Palayamkottai, on Wednesday.

This was Kerala's first win. Earlier it drew with Tamil Nadu in the opening match and has four points. Tamil Nadu also has four points.

Karnataka, which beat Pondicherry, has three points.

Pondicherry has already lost its race for the title and all the other teams have got chance for taking the honours.

Karnataka, thrice in arrears, came back strongly to level at 3-3 in by the 69th minute.

Farhad, spearheading the Kerala attack, gave a fine display with the support coming from hard working skipper Oscar Yesudas. Farhad scored three goals.

Kerala went into the lead in the 23rd minute, when Farhad scored off a crisp pass from skipper Oscar Yesudas. Karnataka equalised in the 30th minute. Karthik sent a fine centre from the right to Kalandar inside the box to do the rest.

Kerala again went into a 3-1 lead as Farhad headed in off a flag kick taken by Ajith in the 34th and Vineeth headed in off another flag kick taken by Ajith in the 41st minute.

Karnataka came back strongly early in the second session as Karthik reduced the margin with a solo, receiving a fine pass from Sudankumar.

Pradeep Kumar found the equaliser in the 69th minute.

Kerala again shot into the lead in the next three minutes as Farhad pounced on a rebound from goalkeeper Dilip, who blocked a powerful shot from Ajit's free kick from near the top of the box. Kerala earned a penalty in the 81st minute.

Oscar completed the tally converting it.
