Robbery case solved within hours; 3 held

CHENNAI: A robbery case, involving Rs.16 lakh in cash, diamonds and 50 sovereign gold jewellery valued at Rs. 9 lakh, at a residential apartment in Egmore on Tuesday evening, was solved just after midnight by the police.

Three youths, including a domestic help at the house, were arrested.

According to the police, Chandan Israni, a businessman, residing in the apartment on Harris Road lodged a complaint at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, alleging that the youngsters had assaulted his wife, Maya (60), with a knife and fled with the valuables and cash.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police (Triplicane), M. Ramasubramani, said a case was registered and all major check-posts and railway stations were alerted.

"We came to know that the accused Deepak [domestic help] had a mobile phone provided by the house owner. Whenever he used it, we located his movement."

At around 12.30 a.m. on Wednesday, the police team zeroed in on him and two others near a private factory near Ambattur. A member of the household accompanying the team identified Deepak. The Assistant Commissioner of Police (Egmore) Amaravarman said it was teamwork that enabled the police nab the accused within 10 hours of the incident.

A case of robbery and attempt to murder were registered. Besides Deepak (19), his friends Saroj (20) and Sudeesh (19), all hailing from Bihar, were arrested.

A city court remanded them to judicial custody. The cash and the valuables were recovered.

Director-General of Police D. Mukherjee, Commissioner of Police Letika Saran, Additional Commissioner of Police S.R. Jangid and Joint Commissioner of Police (Central) Sandeep Rai Rathore visited the Egmore police station and inspected the recovered properties.
