`Take steps to prevent spread of diseases'

HASSAN: As many as 3,233 cases of communicable diseases were reported in the district in March, the district surveillance committee meeting here on Tuesday was informed. Deputy Commissioner K.H. Aswathanarayana Gowda presided.

District Surveillance Officer Rajagopal told the meeting that between January and March 31, 2007, 69 cases of gastroenteritis, 3,439 cases of dysentery, 1,976 cases of diarrhoea, 82 cases of jaundice, 184 cases of influenza, 1,703 cases of dog bite, 104 cases of snakebite, 117 cases of HIV and 133 cases of food poisoning were reported, totalling 7,827. Four people died of gastroenteritis and one each fell victim to HIV/AIDS and diarrhoea.

The district also recorded 389 cases of tuberculosis and 111 cases of malaria during this period.
