BANGALORE: The top seed Sharan Patil advanced to the semifinals of the boys' under-14 singles in the KIMS Talent Series tennis championship with a facile 6-2, 6-2 victory over Nikhil Reddy here on Wednesday. Earlier in the under-18 singles, Sharan Patil went down fighting to the top seed, Lou Soda of Maharashtra in an absorbing three setter at 7-6 (2), 2-6, 6-7 (6). The other players to make the last four round in the under-18 singles were the third seed Harshavardhan Thirani of Bengal, the fifth seed P. Manikandan of Tamil Nadu and the second seed Preetam Roy Mores of Karnataka. The top seed Raveena Shetty led the way to the girls under-14 singles semifinals with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Preethi Ujjaini of Karnataka. Joining her in the semifinals were S. Shwetha of Tamil Nadu and the local girls Surya Suresh and S.P. Ritu. In the State-ranking boys under-10 singles event, B.R. Nikshep set up a title clash with Himanshu V. Rathod. Nikshep defeated Bharath Yogendra 8-3 (best of 15 games) and Himanshu defeated Dhruv V. Kumar 8-4.

Boloor, Manjunath
for Greece
Adith Jagadish Boloor and Nihal Manjunath, both from Derik's Chess School, Mangalore, will take part in the under-13 category in the third World School chess championship to be held at Halkidiki, Greece from April 27. Both are studying in Lourdes Central School, Mangalore. Adith had finished fifth in the same category in the Asian school championship in 2006 and had won the under-12 category in a rapid event held in Singapore. Prasanna Rao, administrator, DCS will accompany the duo.
