Dept. of Posts to lease cargo plane

NEW DELHI: To give a boost to its business, the Department of Posts has decided to lease a cargo aircraft to deliver letters, speed posts and other items. "Our first cargo aircraft will start operating in July and will cater specifically to North-Eastern States and metros," said Communications and Information Technology Minister, Dayanidhi Maran, on Wednesday.

Talking to The Hindu, Mr. Maran said the Department of Posts had decided to lease a cargo aircraft from the Government-carrier Indian. "The plane will be put on dedicated service of the Department to speed up delivery of letters, speed posts and other items," he said.

North-Eastern States

The Department planned to operate the aircraft to North-Eastern States during daytime, while at night, it would operate to Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai.

"We will watch the progress of this endeavour. And if the demand is more and the results are good, we will definitely hire more aircraft to cover more States and regions. We have worked out a comprehensive plan on the project and will implement it in a phased manner," Mr. Maran said.
