CHENNAI: The Government refused to commit itself to a Congress Party demand in the Assembly on Wednesday for creation of a housing colony for Members of Legislative Assembly. Congress legislators D. Sudarsanam and C. Gnanasekaran urged Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and Housing Minister Suba. Thangavelan to build a housing colony for legislators. Mr. Sudarsanam appealed to Mr. Karuananidhi to announce it on the 50th anniversary of the Chief Minister's first election to the Assembly. Mr. Gnanasekaran suggested a few areas including Sholinganallur and Nolambur as possible sites for the colony. The Congress leaders' demand was greeted with thumping of desks from the ruling benches. The Housing Minister replied that the Board had identified a site, but a decision would be made only after the Chief Minister approved the proposal. The Chief Minister had the last word. "If all the parties submit a representation, it can be considered."
