BJP leader acquitted in assault case

COIMBATORE: A Fast Track Court here acquitted on Wednesday Bharatiya Janata Party's National Executive Committee member and former State president C.P. Radhakrishnan in a case of assault registered against him in 2000.

Mr. Radhakrishnan and 22 others were accused of assaulting a Sub Inspector of Police and a police videographer during the funeral procession of a Hindu Munnani activist at R.S. Puram on June 19, 2000. Fast Track Court Judge G. Ramaswamy acquitted Mr. Radhakrishnan and the others observing that the prosecution had not proved the charges beyond reasonable doubt. — Special Correspondent

Sendur blast accused held under NSA

VILLUPURAM: The prime accused in the Sendur blast case Manalipattu G. Sekar has been detained under the National Security Act. The orders were served on Sekar in the Cuddalore Central Prison on Wednesday. The blast that occurred on April 7 had claimed 16 lives and caused injuries to 20 others. — Special Correspondent

MADURAI. A fast track court on Tuesday issued an arrest warrant against Superintendent of Police, K. Premkumar, and three policemen convicted in an assault case. The court ordered the Vadipatti police in the district to produce them. Though the accused were convicted in the assault case, the trial court had released them under Section 3 of the Probation of Offenders Act. In a recent order, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court had set aside the lower court order and sentenced Mr. Premkumar, presently under suspension, and three others to undergo one month simple imprisonment. — Staff Reporter

Suspect in bomb threat cases nabbed

MADURAI: The Tirunelveli police on Wednesday nabbed S. Venkatesh whose name and address was rubber-stamped in post cards that warned of a series of explosions and attack on VVIPs in the State. When cornered by a special team in Tuticorin, Mr. Venkatesh pleaded ignorance to the post cards and claimed that some body had "misused" his name to float the threats.

Held for human sacrifice

UDUMALPET: The Madathukulam Police on Wednesday arrested Mohammed Iqbal (33) for allegedly sacrificing his four-year-old son Arif by immersing him in Amaravathi river at Cholamadevi on April 21. Abdul Jabbar (52), a tantrik, who allegedly told Iqbal to do the sacrifice was also held. — Staff Reporter
