MAKING A PLEA: Members of various political parties staging a dharna in Gulbarga on Wednesday.
GULBARGA: Leaders of major political parties including the Congress, the Janata Dal (Secular) and the CPI joined hands with Janapara Vedike to stage a dharna in the city on Wednesday, demanding that the Centre ensures 27 per cent reservation to Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in institutions of higher education from the current academic year itself. Prominent among those who participated in the dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office included the former Chief Whip of the Janata Dal (Secular) in the Legislative Council Vittal Heroor, District Congress Committee president Allamprabhu Patil, and CPI State Committee member Shankar Kattisanghavi. In a memorandum addressed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that was submitted to the district administration, vedike convener Thimmayya Purla lauded the measures taken by the Union Government for providing 27 per cent reservation to OBCs in IITs and IIMs.
Stay order
It alleged that certain vested interests and communal forces had approached the Supreme Court. It was unfortunate that the Supreme Court had stayed the decision to extend reservation to OBCs in IITs and IIMs, it said.
