Uttar Pradesh
Allahabad: Senior BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi on Wednesday ridiculed the claim of Bharatiya Janshakti chief Uma Bharti that she has withdrawn her candidates from Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh to ``expose'' the party from which she was expelled nearly two years ago. ``The statement is ridiculous. If she thinks that she has such a sway over the Hindu voters in UP that her participation in the polls would have affected the BJP, then I pity her,'' Mr.Joshi told a press conference here. Mr. Joshi's reaction comes a day after Ms.Bharti said she wanted to ``expose'' the BJP by withdrawing nominees from UP polls as it has ``always passed the buck to me, holding me responsible for division of Hindu votes, whenever it lost an election because of its own failings''. He claimed ``the people of UP are casting their votes with memories of the golden days of the Kalyan Singh rule fresh in their minds'' and that the BJP would emerge as the single largest party in the State.
Rigging charge
He charged the ruling Samajwadi Party with trying to ``rig'' the polls, claiming that this was proven by the recovery of huge quantity of arms and explosives from various parts of the State. PTI
