Chandigarh: With a large number of cases of human trafficking and desertion of women by NRI husbands being reported in the State, the Punjab Government has decided to take effective steps to arrest the trend. Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Wednesday announced to appoint an officer of the rank of Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) to expeditiously deal with such cases to provide quick relief to the victims. A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting held here under the chairmanship of Mr. Badal with a delegation led by the president of the Lok Bhalai Party B. S. Ramoowalia.
Fake ads
The Chief Minister announced that the cases of women deserted by the NRI grooms and the youth duped by the travel agents would be settled within a timeframe. Fake advertisements released by erring travel agents and immigration consultants and marriage bureaux would be dealt with severely as per the law. Such ads released in the press would be thoroughly probed so that they could not make gullible youth fall in their trap, he said. The Government would soon evolve a mechanism to probe the authenticity of such advertisements. The Chief Minister pointed out that he would soon take with the Union Home Ministry the deportation of NRI grooms who are declared proclaimed offenders so that they can face legal proceedings in the State.
Fast track courts
Mr. Badal also stressed the need for setting up of fast track courts exclusively for dowry related cases and also advocating for the simplification of the judicial process to the help the victims of travel agents and NRI grooms. Mr. Badal also said the State Government would soon set up an independent department for NRIs Affairs which would certainly help the Government to keep a strict vigil over the illegal activities of travel agents besides checking the trend of desertion of married girls.
