McGrath's landmark

Special Correspondent

Glenn McGrath

Chennai: Aussie pace ace Glenn McGrath became the highest wicket-taker in a single World Cup edition even as his first spell blew away the South African top-order in the second semi-final at St. Lucia on Wednesday.

McGrath picked up three of the first five wickets, with South Africa, electing to bat, collapsing to 27 for five in 9.5 overs.

The side was 103 for eight in the 30th over, with fast bowler Shaun Tait too denting the line-up with three wickets.

Herschelle Gibbs (39) and Justin Kemp were rebuilding the innings, when Tait combined with `keeper Adam Gilchrist to dismiss the former. The Aussies made inroads again. McGrath, who had 22 scalps in the current competition before the last four clash, went past the 23 victims of Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan (in the current edition) and Chaminda Vaas (in 2003). McGrath is also the all-time leading wicket-taker in World Cup history with 70.

Precision was once again the hallmark of McGrath's bowling.

The Aussies were also helped by some poor strokeplay.
