HASSAN: Saalumarada Thimmakka, recipient of national award for championing the cause of growing trees, is facing the threat of eviction from her house.

Replying to felicitations at a function organised by the Veeranjaneya Seva Samithi in Belur on Tuesday, on the occasion of the 79th birth anniversary of actor Rajkumar, she said: "The State Government constructed a house for me in my village in Chitradurga district at a cost of Rs. 75,000. I too contributed towards the cost of cement and other things. The house is not registered in my name. Now the contractor who constructed the house is bringing pressure and has asked me to vacate the house. At this age, I am becoming shelterless."

To move to Bellary

Ms. Thimmakka said some organisations had invited her to guide them in growing trees in Bellary and that she would be moving to Bellary soon. She said: "Even after 25 years of my marriage, I did not have children. I started growing trees and nourished them like my children. In recognition, I was given the President of India award."

Ms. Thimmakka not only planted trees on both sides of the road to a distance of 10 km in Tumkur district, but also watered them for 10 years.

She advised people to plant at least two trees every year and this would be the best tribute to Dr. Rajkumar.

Writer Belur Navab, who was the chief guest, described Dr. Rajkumar as the champion and who fought for the development of language, land and water.
