NEW DELHI: The Delhi Government has given the green signal for construction of 18 rail under-bridges (RUBs) on railway crossings and three grade separators before the start of the Commonwealth Games-2010, Delhi Finance, Planning and PWD Minister A.K. Walia announced on Wednesday. The decision was taken at a high-level meeting presided over by Dr. Walia. It was decided that the projects would be executed by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. The Minister said that in the current financial year, the Government has earmarked Rs.300 crore for execution of these projects relating to the transport sector. The Minister said construction of RUBs and rail over-bridges (ROBs) over railway level crossings had become essential for preventing accidents and ensuring smooth flow of traffic in congested areas where such crossings existed. He said the Government had instructed the MCD to award work relating to these projects within the next six months and complete construction well within the stipulated time limit to avoid cost escalation and enable the Government to make available new infrastructure to the people at the earliest. Dr. Walia said the 18 RUBs at railway level crossings would cost Rs. 402 crore whereas the three grade separators at the Subhas Marg-Delhi Gate intersection, Pankha Road-Dabri crossing and from Filmistan to Boulevard Road on Rani Jhansi Road would cost Rs. 256 crore. "These three places witness heavy traffic congestion that causes delay and harassment to the commuters and vehicle owners,'' he said, expressing confidence that the scenario would change considerably with the execution of the proposed projects.
Cost to be shared
On the specifics of the projects, the Minister said 50 per cent of the cost of the Rail Under Bridges would be borne by the Railways whereas the rest would be taken care of by the local agencies including the Delhi Government.
The spadework for most of the 21 projects has been
