Protest against reservation rule for dhobi and barber posts

Staff Reporter

Procession taken out at venue of selection for APSP battalion

  • GOs stipulate filling of posts by communities concerned
  • Quota implementation for cook and sweeper posts criticised

ANANTAPUR: Jobs meant for dhobis and barbers in the Police Department should be filled only with the communities concerned, the Backward Classes' Welfare Union said here on Wednesday.

The union took out a procession and staged a dharna in front of the police headquarters, where selection for different categories of vacancies for the 14th APSP police battalion, Tadipatri, were being conducted, demanding filling of the fourth class posts only with candidates of the communities concerned. In the notification issued by the Police Department, even the vacancies of dhobis and barbers were meant to be filled by following the general rule of reservation. Thus, the posts were to be filled with OCs, BCs, SCs and STs.

Dhobis and barbers lead by `Rajaka Sankshema Abhivruddhi Sangham and Nayibrahmana Sankshema Abhivruddhi Sangham' took out a procession demanding that the selection process be stopped immediately. They cited the standing instructions issued by the State Government through GO No. 27 and 26 on filling vacancies of dhobis and barbers only with the communities concerned. Leaders of the unions B. Lingamaiah, C. Lingamaiah, J. Premchand, Shanti Narayana and others alleged that the general rule of reservation was being followed for filling these posts only to hijack the jobs. They also criticised the selection process of cooks and sweepers for the police battalion, which was also made by following the general rule of reservation, though both the professions were mostly handled by BCs.

The battalion officials assured the unions of filling the dhobi and barber posts only with the communities concerned.
