BERHAMPUR: Two herds of stray wild elephants from the Lakhari elephant reserve in Gajapati district have started to create havoc at Gunupur area of Rayagada district. Their latest victim was Rayagada correspondent of the ETV Amulyaratna Sahu. Mr Sahu was injured by wild elephants while he was filming them near Khaira village on Tuesday evening. He was shifted to Visakhapatnam for treatment.

This month two persons were killed by wild pachyderms in the same area. On April 13 Bhagaban Kumbhar (35) of Ghutuna village was trampled to death by an elephant while he was returning home along with a friend.After that the same elephant herd ransacked the hut of Ganapati sabar (25) and crushed him to death at Khaira village. Several persons of the area, including the Sarpanch of Titimir Bijay Sabar, have narrowly escaped from the wrath of these elephant herds. People of five panchayats of Chalkamba panchayat under Gunupur block in Rayagada district are panicked after killing of two persons in the area by wild elephants. Speaking to The Hindu the sub-collector of Gunupur, Ranjan Sharma said two elephants herds have strayed into the area. As these two elephant herds are being seen in the valley near the Khaira village, the administration has decided to have a camp of forest officials at the village.
