BHUBANESWAR: The proposed Indian Institute Information Technology (IIIT) will start operating from a rented house here from September this year, said Orissa Information Technology Minister Surya Narayan Patro on Wednesday.Foundation stone for the IIIT was laid by President A P J Abdul Kalam last year. A patch of 100 acres has been identified for the institute at Gothapatna, on outskirt of the city, where postgraduate courses and research in IT would be conducted.
Seed fund
"The State Government will provide Rs 10 crores as seed fund for the institute. Initially, the IIIT will take 60 students to churn out quality teachers in the field of IT. The courses will be self-financing," Mr. Patro said. The 100-acre patch of land would also house a `Knowledge City'. He said the state had 44 engineering colleges but they had lack of quality faculties in IT, which was a major reason behind students from the State failing to qualify employability tests. Moreover, the State Government was preparing map for the second Infocity, on the outskirt of Bhubaneswar. "The first Infocity near Patia in Bhubaneswar almost got filled up. Major IT companies have taken space there. The IDCO has identified 671 acres land near Jatni for the second Infocity," the Minister said. He said a Pune-based architectural firm had been entrusted with the task to prepare a detail plan for the second Infocity. Pointing out that the State was witnessing rapid growth in IT, Mr. Patro said the volume of IT export was Rs 732 crores in 2006-2007 against Rs 465 crores in the previous year. It registered a growth of 58 per cent." As many as 32 IT entities including three major names TCS, Infosys and Satyam were involved in the business. Moreover, 13 small and medium size IT companies did a business of Rs 54.45 crores witnessing a jump of 132 per cent.
