Governor to open Assembly jubilee fete

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Governor R.L. Bhatia will inaugurate celebrations to mark the golden jubilee of the Kerala Legislative Assembly here on April 27. The first sitting of the Assembly took place on April 27, 1958.

The inaugural ceremony, to be held at the Members' Lounge of the new Assembly complex, would be attended by present and former MLAs. Former Speakers T.S. John, A.C. Jose, V.M. Sudheeran, P.P. Thankachan, Varkala Radhakrishnan, Therambil Radhakrishnan, Vakkom B. Purushothaman and M. Vijayakumar would be honoured at the function.

Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan would preside over the function, which would be attended by Union Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi, Nagaland Governor K. Sankaranarayanan, Union Minister of State for External Affairs E. Ahamed, the former Chief Minister K. Karunakaran, leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy and leaders of various legislature groups in the present Assembly, Speaker K. Radhakrishnan told a news conference here on Wednesday.

Mr. Radhakrishnan said the golden jubilee celebrations would last a year and feature a national conference of Speakers, seminars on different topics, exhibitions and programmes involving MLAs and staff of the Legislature Secretariat.

The Legislature and the Legislature Museum would be open to the general public from 5 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. on April 26 and 27 as part of the celebrations, the Speaker said.
