Wayanad to be declared calamity-hit

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Agricultural Debt Relief Commission has decided to recommend to the Government to declare the entire Wayanad district as calamity affected. The commission will conduct an inquiry on its own. The decisions taken by the commission in this connection have been published in the Wayanad Collectorate, taluk offices, panchayat and municipal offices and Krishi Bhavans. Complaints, if any, should be submitted within two weeks of the publication of the notice. They could be submitted directly during sittings or through representatives. — Special Correspondent

Maldives Minister

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Minister of State and Principal Collector of Customs of the Maldives Ibrahim Rashad visited Thiruvananthapuram here on Wednesday for an interaction with the Central Excise and Customs here. Mr. Rashad visited Vizhinjam and the airport here to see the operations of the Customs Department here. Matters related to liaison with the customs wings of both the countries were discussed. — Special Correspondent

Examination dates announced

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Staff Selection Commissioner, Bangalore, will hold the Combined Matric Level (Main) Examination, 2006, on May 12 and 13. Admission certificates for the examination have been despatched to all candidates who were successful in the Preliminary Examination 2006 and opted for centres under Karnataka-Kerala region. Those candidates who do not receive the admission certificates by May 1 should contact the Regional Office of the Commission at First Floor, `E' Wing, Kendriya Sadan, Koramangala, Bangalore- 560 034. Reservation sought

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Chetty Mahasabha has demanded reservation for the community. State federation president B. Sasidharan Pillai said in a statement here on Wednesday that the members of the community should get reservation in appointments to Government service. He said seats in professional courses should be reserved for the students from the community. — Special Correspondent

Crackers explode

at police station

KOCHI: Firecrackers stored on the premises of the Puthenvelikkara police station exploded causing tense moments on Wednesday morning. Vadakekkara Circle Inspector Ramesh, who investigated the incident, said that 6,000 firecrackers and 50 kg of sulphur were stored in an abandoned building near the police station. The materials were confiscated by the tahsildar during a drive against illegal firecracker sale during Vishu. No one was injured in the incident, he said. — Staff Reporter

Textbooks ready

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Textbooks for the current academic year are ready for distribution, according to the DPI. There is no change in their prices. The school society secretaries are to collect them from the depots concerned from April 26. The prices should be exhibited in the depots and the societies. — Special Correspondent
