Staff Correspondent

  • KDA to start the centre within a month
  • MESCOM officials commended for their regard for Kannada

TAKING STOCK: Chairman of Kannada Development Authority Siddalingaiah speaking to officials at Mangalore railway station on Wednesday.

MANGALORE: Kannada Development Authority (KDA) will start a Kannada learning centre at the Mangalore railway station within a month, chairman of the authority Siddalingaiah announced on Wednesday.

Speaking to presspersons after inspecting the implementation of Kannada at the station, he said several suggestions had been made to the railway officials to improve the use of Kannada. They had been asked to appoint people who could speak the language at the earliest, so that local people were not inconvenienced while trying to communicate with the officials at the station, he said. Kannada should be used in all notices, tickets and signboards at the station, he told officials.

Taking exception to mistakes on several Kannada signboards at the station, he said they should be rectified.

Dr. Siddalingaiah said that all trains that passed through Mangalore must have Kannada destination boards.

During the course of the inspection, he criticised the officials as the Mangalore-Coimbatore passenger train did not have a board in Kannada. The boards were in Malayalam, English and Hindi.

Later, he visited the office of Mangalore Electricity Supply Company Ltd. After going through several official documents, he expressed satisfaction on the manner in which Kannada had been implemented in MESCOM.

He commended MESCOM officials for their regard for Kannada.

Member of the authority and president of the Dakshina Kannada district unit of Kannada Sahitya Parishat Pradeep Kumar Kalkura was present.
