Half a dozen training institutes to be set up

K.N.Nehru

CHENNAI: Half a dozen training institutes will be set up in the State for drivers of heavy vehicles, Transport Minister K.N. Nehru informed the Assembly on Wednesday.

This project would be implemented, taking financial assistance from the Union Government, the Minister said, adding that autorickshaw drivers would also be covered.

Similar institutes

Two automobile manufacturers, Maruti and Ashok Leyland, sought the Government's permission to establish similar institutes, the Minister told the Assembly during question hour. Electricity Minister Arcot N. Veerasamy said every department was advised to go in for low power consuming gadgets.

He held discussions with Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin and suggested to his department to install such streetlights.

On the demand for providing increased free connections to agricultural pumpsets, the Minister said every connection would cost about Rs. 1 lakh.

The farm sector accounted for 27 per cent of the total consumption and in view of the free power scheme, the Government provided Rs. 1,500 crore to the Electricity Board. If more free connections were to be given, the Board had to examine the situation, as such a course would entail a greater burden.
