An advocate by profession, an actor by accident

S.R. Ashok Kumar

"I am the kind of person who never learnt anything from anybody. I learn a lot by observation"

Actor Charuhasan

Charuhasan is an advocate by profession but an actor by accident. His films have won various State and Central Government awards. He is also one of the most well-informed people in the film industry. Charuhasan talks about his earlier days in the film industry and about his present life.

I am basically an introvert and never took part in any function during my school days. I was an average student and just managed to clear the examination. I was disliked by my headmaster, who thought I was capable of topping the class.

I went to school when I was nine as I was not well till that age. As my father was in charge of school education for the whole district, I was assigned a special tutor. I was admitted to the fifth standard directly. I always got a pass till I became a lawyer.

I am the kind of person who never learnt anything from anybody. I am used to doing things on my own. I learnt a lot by observation. When I became a popular actor, I was called to address 3,000 students at BITS Pilani. I told them that acquiring knowledge is important, not ranks. My entry into the film industry is a fluke. It all happened at Ooty for `Udiripookal', directed by Mahendran.

Though he offered me the role, he was not happy with the end result after the shooting. I thought it was all over for me. But it was one of my fellow actors who was shunted and in came Sarath Babu.

After my first film, my friend, Girish Kasravalli, called me to act in his Kannada film `Thabarina Katha'.

It not only got me the best actor award at the national level but also got the best film award.

I have directed two films, `Puthiya Sangamam' and `IPC 512'. I must have acted in about 100 films in all the south Indian languages and in Hindi.

Most of them are Tamil and Malayalam films, while I have also acted in some Telugu and Kannada films.

The list of my favourite films includes `Atharvam' and `Vachanam' in Malayalam, `Thabarina Katha' in Kannada and `Vedam Puthithu' and `Uthirippookal' in Tamil.

I like Srividya and Kamal Haasan and admire Jaishankar and Sivakumar.
