Another hospitality programme soon

Students queuing up for hotel and hospitality management courses have one more place to apply. The Apeejay Surrendra Park Hotels group, with a big presence in Bangalore, has launched the Apeejay Institute of Hospitality in Navi Mumbai. The new institute will soon launch a three-year comprehensive degree programme, with a student intake of about 60. The institute, says the group Managing Director Vijay Dewan, will also offer an executive development programme for senior and mid-level industry professionals. Besides, the institute is designed to function as an internal resource for training company executives through a management training programme. Symposium

Last week, the city's Dayananda Sagar College of Biological Sciences and BIOMIC, an association of young biologists, got together to organise an engaging symposium on "Emerging trends in Biotechnology." Over 300 delegates turned up for the event, giving students a glimpse into the vast unexplored opportunities that lay before them as a career avenue. Launching the symposium, the former Indian Institute of Science (IISc) director, G. Padmanabhan, drew the students' attention to the tremendous advances made in two key sectors within biotechnology: Molecular Biology and Gene Therapy. The discovery of new drugs and use of genes, proteins and antibodies as therapeutic molecules was exciting. So were the discovery and the use of new generation vaccines. According to Prof. Padmanabhan, stem cell therapy with and without gene modification was poised for major applications.

Toppers all

The city's M.S. Ramaiah Institute of Technology is on a high ever since its students bagged 37 ranks, five of them first ranks, in different university examinations. Among the toppers are Lester Roland Rozario (B.Arch), Punatar Aakash Dilipkumar (MCA), Janardhana K. (M. Tech in Manufacturing Science and Engineering), Jyothi Raveendanath Kori (M. Tech in Software Engineering) and Gracelin Shinie (M. Tech in Structural Engineering).

In the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) examinations, MSRIT students also bagged the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 7th ranks in B.Arch; 8th and 10th ranks in BE Biotechnology; 3rd and 5th ranks in Civil Engineering; 2nd, 5th, 8th and 10th ranks in Chemical Engineering; 2nd and 10th ranks in Electrical and Electronics Engineering; 4th and 10th ranks in Industrial Engineering and Management; 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 7th ranks in Instrumentation Technology; 7th and 10th ranks in Mechanical Engineering; 3rd and 9th ranks in Medical Electronics; 1st and 7th ranks in MCA, 2nd and 3rd ranks in MBA; 1st and 3rd ranks in M.Tech Manufacturing Science and Engineering; 1st and 3rd ranks in M.Tech Software Engineering; 1st and 2nd ranks in M.Tech Structural Engineering and the 2nd rank in M.Tech Digital Communication Engineering.

Workshop

The Marie Curie Physics Association of Maharani Lakshmi Ammanni College is now in the midst of a national workshop on "Development and Maintenance of Lab Equipment." The workshop, which began on April 24, will go on till April 27.

The event is designed to benefit physics lecturers and laboratory attendants from different colleges across the country.
