KOCHI: A two-day `South Indian Muslim Convention for Social Justice' will be held here on May 26-27 to discuss the Central and State Governments' `inaction' on the recommendations of the Sachar Committee which studied the backwardness of Muslims across the country. Leading Muslim intellectuals, educationalists and activists from all the southern States will attend the convention. A number of Ministers from the Centre and the States are expected to speak, apart from senior politicians. The meet is being organised jointly by Muslim Education Society, Kerala Muslim Education Association, Muslim Employees Cultural Association and several others. "Muslims are deeply concerned over the delay in taking affirmative action by the Central and State Governments for the benefit of the Muslim community in the light of the findings and suggestions of the Sachar Committee," a statement by the organising committee said. Even after the committee brought out the `desperate and pitiable conditions' of the community in social, economic, employment and educational fields, the Governments remain silent on follow-up actions. The recommendation of the sub-committee of the Human Resource Development Ministry against reservation for Muslims in education institutions gave an indication to how the Establishment was planning to scuttle the Sachar recommendations, the statement said. "The community is also alarmed at the efforts of certain sections and groups to take an adversarial approach to distorting the creamy layer concept to exclude the Muslim community from benefiting from reservation for OBCs in general and Muslims in particular," the statement added.
Declaration
A Kochi declaration will be drafted at the end of the two-day convention, which would be presented to the Central and State Governments.
