Industrial Carnival to provide platform for SSIs

Staff Reporter

To be held at Marine Drive from April 28 to May 3

KOCHI: The revival of the biennial Industrial Carnival, aimed at providing a common platform for small-scale industrial units in the State for marketing their products, is expected to bring in about 50,000 visitors and showcase a wide variety of products ranging from processed food to plywood PVC products.

Nearly 90 per cent of the 200 participants have arrived for the carnival, being jointly organised by the State Industries Department and the Kerala State Small Industries Association (KSSIA).

Biggest in State

The carnival will be the biggest of its kind in the State for small industrial units.

President of the association A.P.M. Abdul Rahim said that 60,000 sq. ft. of carpeted area was ready on Marine Drive where the carnival would be held between April 28 and May 3.

The carnival was held every two years since 1994.

However, the show is stalled since 2000 and its revival is expected to provide an impetus to the marketing efforts being made by the small-scale industrial units, said B. Prasanna Kumar, manager, Ernakulam District Industries Centre, here on Wednesday.

Printing industry, vinyl and ply board units, rubber-based units, automobile parts-markers, agro industry units, mineral water, home appliances, ayurveda units, foam filling machines, light engineering equipment, handicraft units and antique design furniture units will be among those participating at the carnival.

Mr. Prasanna Kumar said that public sector units too were taking part in the carnival and that it would be a big opportunity for the units to interact with participants like the Southern Railway, Indian Navy and the Cochin Shipyard.

The Bamboo Corporation, Forest Industries Travancore Limited, Rubco, Hantex, Rubber Board, Spices Board, Cashew Corporation etc. too are participating.

Opportunity to interact

The bigger participants like the Indian Space Research Organising (ISRO) will hold discussions with small industrial unit promoters to see if they can meet the requirements of the big units.

The co-sponsors of the carnival are the Small Industries Development Corporation, Small Industries Development Bank of India, Small Industries Service Institute and the National Small Industries Corporation besides Canara Bank, Union Bank of India and the State Bank of Travancore.
