This Day That Age
D.C.S. Compton, the England cricketer, is to retire from first-class cricket at the end of the coming season, he announced in London on April 25. The decision will not come as much of a surprise to followers of cricket, who know that he had his right knee-cap removed in November 1955. Few people expected him to play again after the operation, but after a slow recovery, Compton returned to Test cricket with a brilliant 94 against the Australian touring team last year in the final Test. He has lost much of his mobility both at the wicket and in the field although he played in all five Test matches against South Africa during the last tour. So far, in his first-class career, Compton has scored 36,710 runs and taken 573 wickets. He has hit 119 centuries, 17 of them in Test matches.
