Cuddalore
Special Correspondent
CUDDALORE: A total of 2,160 houses, located in the coastal areas and near the backwaters of Cuddalore district, have been identified as the most prone to natural calamities. As there is a proposal to construct permanent houses for them, the World Bank team visited the Pachankuppam on Wednesday to inspect condition of the houses. The team comprising Narayanan, Sankar Narayanan and S. Vaitheeswaran, held talks with C.V. Sankar, Special Officer (Relief and Rehabilitation), Rajendra Ratnoo, District Collector, and other officials. According to the Collector, the State Government had classified the dwelling units into two categories: those located within 200 metres of the shoreline, and those located beyond 200 metres but within 1,000 metres from the shore. In the enumeration carried out during November and December 2006, it was found that 2,160 houses (excluding those damaged by the tsunami) ought to be reconstructed as permanent structures. Of these, a majority of them (1,440 units) were lying within the 200-metre limit.
World Bank assistance
The Government proposed to build permanent houses with the World Bank assistance. Those units, built 10 years ago under the Indira Awas Yojana and by the TAHDCO and Fisheries Department but were now in bad shape, would also be rebuilt. The Collector noted that the tentative list of beneficiaries were put up at the offices of the panchayats, panchayat unions, village administrative offices, at the fair price shops and the buildings of self-help groups.
Revised list
If any names were left out, they could apply to the respective local bodies. After accommodating these petitions, the revised list would be placed before the Gram Sabhas for approval. If any further corrections were needed beyond this stage, only the Collector could do so.
