Speciality clinic for diabetic patients

Government to examine all possibilities: Minister

PUDUCHERRY: The Government will examine all possibilities of establishing a speciality clinic for diabetic patients in the Union Territory.

Health Minister E. Valsaraj announced this in the Assembly while answering a query from Pattali Makkal Katchi Member R.K.R. Anantharaman whether the Government planned to open such a clinic.

The Minister said that it was not under immediate priority, but would examine all possibilities. About 12 per cent of the population above 20 years of age was diabetic. The Government distributed free insulin through its hospitals and sub-centres to diabetic patients, the Minister noted.

The Minister also clarified that the Chief Minister had already written to the University Grants Commission on the need to take the administration into confidence before according "Deemed University" status to any institutes here. He gave this clarification after Dravida Munnetra Khazhagam Member S.P. Sivakumar said two colleges had not followed the mandatory guidelines in getting "Deemed University" status. He said under the UGC rules, the Deemed Universities cannot affiliate other colleges, but the two colleges had violated the norms. The Minister promised to look into the charge.

The Chief Minister also informed the House that in future legislators would be consulted before selecting the physically-disabled persons for monthly financial assistance.

Puducherry Munnetra Congress Member N. Anand had raised the issue that MLA's were not consulted by the Welfare Department.
