A Delhi landmark turns 60

A familiar landmark located in the heart of the Capital, the American Center Library has offered excellent library and information services to three generations of Government officials, academics, journalists and, of course, Generation X. Now it is gearing up to organise a yearlong festival of events to mark its 60th anniversary in Delhi.

Talking about the American Center Library's 60 years here, United States Embassy Minister-Counsellor for Public Affairs Larry Schwartz says: "The American Center is proud to have been part of New Delhi's rich cultural and intellectual life since the time of India's Independence. Our library has set the standard as an extraordinary venue for research and education. We intend to continue welcoming and working with Indian visitors in the years to come."

The American Center will host a free-entry "Open House" for the public at its 24 Kasturba Gandhi Marg premises this Saturday between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. Besides offering discounted memberships, the Open House will have lectures and screening of a film, "A Civil Action". There will be an information session on studying in the U.S. and promotion of Span magazine.

For general knowledge enthusiasts there will be an exciting quiz on America and the winners will walk home with prizes. There will also be surprise gifts and refreshments for parched throats.

Also on the cards is a performance by native American hoop dancer Kevin Locke at 7-30 p.m. on Saturday at the Baha'i House of Worship Auditorium at Nehru Place.

The American Center and Delhi Poetree are also organising an evening of poetry with award-winning American poet Erica Funkhouser on April 30 at Kasturba Gandhi Marg.
