Plan to counsel HIV positive parents and children

Staff Reporter

Through 36 camps to be conducted between May 7 and 11

TIRUNELVELI: Counselling for the HIV positive parents and their children under 14 will be conducted in 36 camps across the district between May 7 and 11 to create awareness on the dreaded disease, the Collector, G. Prakash has said.

Addressing the meeting held at Tirunelveli Medical College on Wednesday to finalise the strategies to be followed in the counselling camps, Mr. Prakash said that the Union Health Ministry was annually spending over Rs. 1,500 crore for identifying AIDS patients and providing medicines to them. Since proper medication could shield the foetus from the HIV positive mother, the message should be disseminated everywhere, especially in rural areas.

"To create awareness among the mothers, we are conducting rallies, camps and other programmes.

In this line, we've decided to organise 36 camps in the district between May 7 and 11 with the prime objective of educating the HIV positive parents and their wards. I appeal to them to make the best use of the camps," Mr. Prakash said.

The Dean, Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital (TVMCH), Hemalatha Ganapathi, Deputy Dean, TVMCH, N. Palaniappan, the Superintendent, TVMCH, Dr. Vinayagam, Joint Director, Department of Health Services, M.S. Abdul Ghani, Deputy Directors, Health Services, K.A. Meeramohideen and V. Shanmugasundaram, and representatives from NGOs participated in the meeting.
