Early gains not held on BSE

MUMBAI: The Sensex surrendered its initial gains on Thursday and ended 11 points higher on alternate bouts of buying and selling, stretching its rise for the fifth straight session.

Dealers attributed the two-way movements to final day of derivatives April contract as operators and retail investors booked profits in select high-priced counters and made purchases in other shares.

The Sensex opened firm at 14273.17 and fluctuated in a range of 14383.72 and 14127.18.

It later ended at 14228.88, up by 11.11 points or 0.08 per cent, over Wednesday's close of 14217.77. The S&P CNX Nifty also rose by 10.55 points or 0.25 per cent to 4177.85 from 4167.30. Foreign institutional investors continued buying after pumping in Rs. 501.50 crore on April 24. They picked up shares worth Rs. 781.25 crore on Wednesday, as per the provisional figures. Firm Asian markets also boosted the market sentiment. — PTI
