Thirani upsets Sodha

BANGALORE: The third seed Harshavardhan Thirani of West Bengal, with his strong first serve and a steady baseline game, stopped the top-seed Luv Sodha of Maharashtra 6-1, 7-5 to set up a title clash with Tumkur's Preetham Roy Mores in the boys' under-18 singles of the KIMS-AITA Talent Series tennis championship at the Indian Gymkhana courts here on Thursday. On a very warm afternoon, the two semifinals offered contrasting fares. Mores playing an aggressive game against the fifth seed P. Manikandan, shook off a sluggish start to win 7-6(3), 6-3. The Harshvardhan-Sodha contest saw some good rallies, especially in the second set, but the Bengal lad was far more consistent than his Mumbai rival.

Patil beats Preetham

Meanwhile, the top seed Sharan Patil proved too good for his teammate from Karnataka, G. Preetham and won 6-2, 6-3 and entered the under-14 singles final where he meets the second seed S. Raghavendra.

In the girls' under-18 singles final, the top seed Rachita Sarda will meet the second seed Nimisha Mohan, while in the under-14 singles, Ravina Shetty will play S.P. Ritu in an all-Karnataka final. In the State ranking events, A. Kashyap and Spoorthi Shivalingaiah bagged the boys and girls' under-12 singles titles respectively while B.R. Nikshep won the boys' under-10 singles title.

The results (semifinals): Singles: Boys: U-18: Harsahavardhan Thirani bt Luv Sodha 6-1, 7-5; Preetham Roy Mores bt P. Manikandan 7-6(3), 6-3. U-14: Sharan Patil bt G. Preetham 6-2, 6-3; S. Raghavendra bt Sumukh Karanth 6-1, 3-0 conceded.

Girls: U-18: Rachita Sarda bt M.P. Nitha 6-3, 6-1; Nimisha Mohan bt Spoorthi Biradar 7-5, 7-5. U-14: Ravina Shetty bt Surya Suresh 6-2, 6-0; S.P. Ritu bt S. Shwetha 7-5, 6-3.

State-ranking tournament:Singles: Boys: U-12: Final: A. Kashyap bt Ankith Aravind 6-1, 6-0. Semifinals: Kashyap bt Evans Mirajkar 9-4; Ankith Aravind bt S. Sagar 9-2.
