It appears that the large-scale conversion of midland laterite hillocks and paddy fields/wetlands in Kannur drew the attention of the district authorities. The indefinite fasting began by environmental activist Bhaskaran Vellur was called off on the fourth day on Wednesday following the intimation by the district administration that stringent action would be taken against demolition of hills and reclamation of paddy fields/wetlands. Mr. Vellur and the Kannur Jilla Paristhithi Samithi he represents are pleased that the district administration has made the assurance as announced in a Government press release. Officials have been instructed to invoke Land Utilisation Rules to ensure action against those involved in levelling the hills and filling the paddy fields and wetlands. Local environmentalists are not extremely optimistic. They say they will watch how the instruction of the district administration will be implemented.
